Horace Rattigan, 23, rescued a 92-year-old wheelchair-bound woman from the second story of a house that was on fire late Saturday afternoon. The amazing part of this story is he had no firefighting background.
Deputy Chief Richard Hoedemaker hailed Rattigan as “a good Samaritan.” Rattigan said he was walking from a nearby bus stop around 5:30 p.m. when he saw a house fire and a woman knocking on the window for help. “I kicked the front door in, then went through the doorway,” Rattigan said. “It was smoky, and it was dark. The woman was in a wheelchair, and I could see that one of her legs was amputated.” Rattigan said the woman was “barely conscious” as he carried her down the stairs and then outside.
“I’m really surprised that I did that,” Rattigan said. “I’m just thankful to have gotten her out.” Hoedecker said the woman and three other residents of the home have been displaced indefinitely due to extensive fire damage. The fire appears to have started at the rear of the second floor, with the kitchen area on that floor and the attic being severely damaged.
